Dear visitor,
Thank you for your interest in tutoring and educational consulting services. My name is Khoi Luu, and I’m a former math and English teacher from a top-tier, New York City private school. For the past fifteen years, I’ve had the privilege of tutoring the best and brightest students from Phillips Exeter, Trinity, Collegiate, LaGuardia, Stuyvesant, Regis, Beacon, St. Ann’s, Poly Prep, Brooklyn Tech, LaGuardia, Nightingale-Bamford, Staten Island Academy, Staten Island Tech, Packer Collegiate, Xavier, Manhattan Friends, and dozens of other schools.
In high school I won the National Merit Scholarship, an award given to 1,800 students out of 1.2 million seniors nationwide. My SAT score was equivalent to today’s perfect score of 2,400/1,600. I also graduated with honors from Harvard. My strongest assets as a teacher, however, are my creativity, compassion, patience, and sense of humor.
In the past 15 years:
· 50 of my students have qualified as National Merit Scholarship Students.
· My students have increased their scores an average of 310 points on the SAT and 6 points on the ACT.[i]
· My students have been accepted to Georgetown, Harvard, Boston College, Villanova, Yale, Princeton, U Penn, George Washington, and many others.
· I’ve developed innovative calculator strategies that help students solve some of the hardest math problems in, literally, seconds.
I’m also a published writer, and so I love
teaching the essay sections of the SAT or ACT. A while back, one of my stories
was selected by Princeton Professor Joyce Carol Oates to appear in Best New American Voices: Fiction by Today’s
Most Innovative New Writers.[ii] (Harcourt).
I offer private (one-on-one) tutoring; tutoring in pairs; “Fundamentals Plus” classes (10+ students); and Honors classes (10+ students). For private tutoring I even offer the option of tutoring over the Internet. I also provide college admissions counseling. I used to work as an alumnus interviewer for Harvard, and so I would be happy to conduct mock interviews and advise students on their college essays. Please click on the tab called “Admissions Essay Editing” to see sample essays that I've edited.
For many students, the summer before junior year is the ideal time to start tutoring. If your child’s PSAT scores are high, we can start in the fall of junior year. But if your child will be a recruited athlete or has skipped a year in math or is aiming for the National Merit Scholarship, the ideal time to start is spring of sophomore year. Please refer to the F.A.Q. for more information.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you will consider me as your child’s teacher.
Sincerely,
Khoi Luu
